Nerds, please stop suggesting Joss Whedon as the number one filmmaker to tackle the new Star Wars trilogy/franchise. I agree with you that Whedon should been involved, to an extent. Whedon is a talented writer and can help create/map out a great foundation for these films to be built upon. If Whedon has some free time, bring him in the writing/pitching sessions. Make him the Leigh Brackett or Lawrence Kasdan of the new Star Wars. Writing, spitballing, providing story structure and what not. Just don’t put him behind the camera and have him director. Whedon isn’t a very cinematic director.
Star Wars is very cinematic. Bold colors. Strong editing. The kind of filmmaking that requires shooting in 2:40:1. That’s not Joss Whedon and it’ll never be Joss Whedon. Irvin Kershner, the director of Empire Strikes Back was a journeyman director, bouncing from project to project because he probably got along with actors and finished on time and on budget.
Directors like David Cronenberg and David Lynch were approached and turn down the Return of the Jedi directing job because it wasn’t them. So, nerds, stop suggesting and getting all of your hopes worked up about Guillermo Del Toro or Alfonso Cuaron or Rian Johnson directing a new Star Wars film. Or getting all worked up and angry about the mere suggestion of Zack Snyder directing a film. Snyder is a strong visual filmmaker and I want to believe understands how a Star War film should look. Now, if David Fincher wants to come in and kick off things the right way, that would be great.

I agree. JW is cool, but I don’t see this as his thing. I feel like he has been there and done that with Firefly, which was very Star Warsish- but amped up, and I don’t think he can take a step back to fit the Star Wars tone, what fans want.
